SMALL AND RURAL COURT JUDICIAL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

The Superior Courts of Alpine, Amador, Butte, Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Mendocino, Modoc, Mono, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity and Yuba have come together to form the Small and Rural Court Judicial Mentorship Program, a regional component of the larger California Judicial Mentorship Program. The Small and Rural Court Judicial Mentorship Program, a partnership between the Governor's Office and the California Judiciary, is looking to expand the pool of qualified judicial applicants from diverse legal backgrounds and diverse communities. We believe that this program may help encourage prospective applicants to complete the application process. This regional program is similar to the programs throughout the state that connect mentor judges with attorneys to increase the applicant pool for new judges.

The program matches attorneys committed to public service from across the region with judges also throughout the region who will help demystify the judicial appointment process, answer questions about the application and vetting process, and suggest new skills and experiences to improve suitability for appointment. Mentor judges and coordinators will work with local bar associations, nonprofit legal organizations, government lawyers, law firms, and solo practitioners to encourage potential judicial candidates to apply for an appointment. The goal will be to mentor participating attorneys in their development, and therefore provide another avenue by which to select highly qualified applicants eligible for appointment to the bench.
